Why standing seam roofing suits the Qatari climate

A roof sheet in Qatar spends the day expanding and the night contracting, and the daily range it moves through is larger than in most places a roofing detail was originally designed for. That single fact decides more about roof performance here than the choice of coating or colour.

A through-fixed roof is screwed down through the face of the sheet into the structure below. Every one of those screws is a hole made deliberately through the weathering surface, sealed by a washer. There may be several thousand of them on a warehouse. When the sheet expands and contracts against fixings that cannot move with it, the hole slowly works oval, the washer loses its grip, and eventually the fixing is a leak. Nothing was installed badly. The detail was asked to hold still in a climate that does not.

Standing seam works differently. The panels join at a raised seam clipped to the structure below, rather than fixed through the sheet. With no penetration through the weathering surface there are far fewer points where water can enter, and — the part that matters more here — the clip allows the sheet to slide as it heats and cools rather than tearing at its fixings. The roof is permitted to do the thing it is going to do anyway.

This is also why standing seam pairs naturally with long spans and shallow pitches, where a through-fixed roof would have both more fixings and more accumulated movement to absorb.

It is not automatically the right answer. A small building, a short roof run, a structure with a steep pitch, or a budget that will not carry the system may all point back to a through-fixed roof, which is a perfectly sound detail within its limits. The mistake is choosing between them on appearance, or on a price per square metre compared without reference to the roof run and the movement it has to absorb.
